Rocks Brought Them Together
Zooming in, you can catch their personalities as they're about to throw the rocks...
Sam taste-tests each rock before it goes overboard and Aiden selects the perfect rock with his tongs he grabbed from the kitchen drawer.
And into the pit they go!! I don't know how long they were out there doing this before I caught them, but it had to be about 20 minutes or so.

"Mrs. Chen made some tarts. She sold 3/5 of them in the morning and 1/4 of the remainder in the afternoon. If she sold 200 more tarts in the morning than in the afternoon, how many tarts did she make?" (The article said it was a fifth grade problem) I know the answer from the article, but I kind of want to see the steps to GET the answer...Just if you have time, I know you are a busy mama!
I'm a nerd, I know, but I have to know this! It's been bugging me.
I know I'm not Edda, but I wanted to try and solve this just for kicks. This probably scares people because it has fractions. Did you know that four out of three Americans struggle with fractions?
Let the total number of tarts = x.
Tarts sold in the morning:
m = 3/5 * x
Afternoon tarts:
a = 2/5 * 1/4 * x = 1/10 * x
(remember that is is a quarter of the remainder, not the total)
She sold 200 more in the morning, so we need to subtract the morning amount for them to be equal.
m - 200 = a
3/5 * x - 200 = 1/10 * x
(Move the 200 to the right)
3/5 * x = 1/10 * x + 200
(Subtract 1/10 * x from both sides)
1/2 * x = 200
(Multiply by 2)
x = 400
Did I get it right?
