One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

So last night was a rough one. Earlier in the day, I had called to do the regular check-up on Sam since I can't go in to visit him (I'm still sick) and the nurse said that everything was fine and there were no new developments. Later that evening, I couldn't stop thinking about Sam and had this overwhelming feeling that I needed to call over there. So I did and got bad news. Sam kept forgetting to breath all throughout the day, which made his heart rate drop. When this happens too much, it can be a sign of infection. They told me that they were doing some blood work on him right then and that they would call me back with the results.

An hour and a half later, I get a call from the doctor telling me that Sam has an infection and that they will have to do a spinal tap to make sure the infection hasn't spread to his brain. She says this will take another hour.

TWO hours later, Rex calls me. (In the meantime I had been sobbing over the phone to Rex, who decided it may be best if the doctor tell him the news first, since I was obviously not all with it.) Rex told me that Sam's spinal fluid came out negative for infection and that he was already doing much better. Sam is back on an IV with antibiotics, back on oxygen, and back in a heated bed since he wasn't maintaining his body temperature.

I am so relieved that Sam doesn't have meningitis and that they caught the infection before it got worse. Even though we took a couple steps back last night, I'm just so happy that my little boy is safe again. Once again, keep praying for Sam that he'll get better soon. I may be able to visit him tonight if I wear a mask. I just want to hold him and tell him everything will be all right.

Edda, I am glad that Sam didn't have menegitis. I understand the scared feeling as a mother knowing your child is getting a spinal tap (Claire had one at 5 weeks old). I hope that he continues to get better and that you get better too!

This reminds me of the totally out-of-the-ordinary tornado that just passed through Dallas last week. You said it yourself: when in rains it pours! Edda, just remember that the Lord doesn't forget about us. And we don't forget about you. We are all holding our breath waiting for this saga to be over. For your family to all be back together again. Thank goodness he is okay, I hope that you get to hold him again ASAP!
Tell Rex happy (lonely) father's day, and we'll be praying for you all.
