While the Cat's Away...

I wish I could say, "The mice play!" to finish the saying, but more truthfully, we've been WORKING HARD. Rex has started traveling again during the weeks, so me and the boys try to keep busy and productive to make the time pass more quickly. This week we worked on getting the garden ready.

Here's what we did a couple months ago when we had a few warm days. Aiden helped move the rocks with me and I taped off the design of the garden while the boys took their afternoon naps. OK, so this is how it started.... then the real work began.

Sam's job was to supervise from the deck. He was very observant and quite the cheerleader.

Aiden's job was to loosen the mud between his toes, throw the occasional stray rock off to the side, and give Mommy hugs and kisses. He's so sweet.
I leveled the garden as best I could (our yard is on quite the hill!) and put in edging. The dirt here is... actually not dirt at all. It's CLAY. Which means under the pressure of all those rocks - combined with intense, dry sunshine - it turns into BRICK. I didn't come across one earthroom because there is absolutely no wiggle room in this soil to hold any living creature. In order to even make a dent in the soil with a shovel, I had to soak it first and then hack away for hours. It was really hard work. I'm going to have to add a ton of compost to get anything to grown in there... OK, enough of me whining. On to the good stuff.

Sam jumped his praises and squeals to keep us going until nap time. While the boys slept, I finished it.

And here she is! I can't wait to fill it up with good soil and plant my veggies!

And at the end of a hard day's work, Aiden and I cuddled up and drank chocolate milk on Mommy's bed while watching a movie. What a good week.
