A Very Happy Birthday to CADE!

Welcome to our little family, Cade!

Cade made his appearance on Friday night, November 9 at 11:24pm.
Weight: 7lb 12oz
Length: 19 1/2"

After a very VERY fast and furious delivery (I broke my record!) little Cade came to us, healthy and pink and already a little chubby!  I could not believe how BIG he was since both of my previous babies were on the undercooked side. Rex and I ooh'd and aww'd over him and loved him from the very beginning.  I just couldn't believe that he was finally here and OUT of me - and Rex just couldn't believe that I didn't kill any nurses.  More on that later.

Oh why wait, here's the BIRTH STORY for all who care to read.

I had been cramping all day Friday about every 15 minutes.  My mom and I went on walks together up and down the big hill outside our neighborhood, but weren't really hopeful since I was on the "brink of labor" (doctor's words exactly) for a week now.  We decided that we better get our minds off waiting and go to JoAnne's to get materials to start new projects for us to work on.  Wouldn't you know that very night after starting said projects, the cramps became closer together and ouchier than before.  At 8:00pm I called the doctor and got the OK to go to the hospital, but there was a catch.  The hospital we had registered at and toured even and LOVED was full for the night so we'd have to go to a different hospital that was twice as far away.  Needless to say, I was not a happy camper about that and became worried that we wouldn't make it in time since I GO FAST.  (those are the magic words for this story.)  I tried not to panic and google how to deliver babies in emergencies.  (I did.)

When we got to the hospital, there was another girl in front of me who was NOT in labor and another lady who had come in to get induced who was also NOT in labor.  Rex left to go park the car since there was a wait, and I began to panic again since I GO FAST.  After a particularly rough contraction while listening to the other women get registered before me, I started crying and told a nurse that she better get me in soon because... I GO FAST..... AND.... I WANT AN EPIDURAL!!  With Aiden I didn't have time to get an epidural because - you guessed it - I go fast, and I really wish I had had one.  It was not a fun experience.  Anyways, she told me to chill basically and wait my turn.  Grrr.

Finally I got into a room and the first words out of my mouth when I saw the nurse was "I want an epidural."  She smiled and said that I was only dilated to a 3 1/2 and she couldn't get one started until I was a 5.  She even had the nerve to tell me that she'd come back in 2 hours to check on me and that there was a possibility that I'd be going home.  I told her that wasn't likely since I GO FAST.  Whatever.  She left.  Rex and I started watching a TV show on his iPad to pass the time.  After 45 minutes, I started getting the shakes and was having to breathe pretty hard to get through the contractions.  I called the nurse to check on me.  I was dilated to a 5 and she said the most beautiful words ever, "We'll get your epidural started right away!"  Yay!!!

I was under the impression that once you got the OK to get an epidural, they immediately wheeled in a cart with a gigantically glorious needle and poked you right then and there.  Nope.  We had to wait for the anesthesiologist, sign paperwork, get an IV, wait for the IV to drain completely, and give verbal confirmation to all the risks involved along with personal history recitations.  While waiting for the anesthesiologist (the first step) the contractions got very intense.  During the middle of a strong one, I told Rex that I was going to call the nurse again and tell her to hurry.

"Honey, just wait.  They're on their way."
"But they need to get here FASTER!"
"Edda, just relax"
"I'm going to push the button!"
"Edda, don't push the button."
"I'm going to do it!"
"Edda..."
BEEP!
Nurses voice: "Can I help you?"
Me: "HURRY!"

The doctor comes rushing in, obviously under the impression that I was giving birth right then.  When I told her that I GO FAST and that I wanted an epidural NOW, she patiently told me that I had to wait until my IV bag was completely drained first.  I looked over at the bag.  It was 3/4 full.  I started balling my eyes out and told her that I wasn't going to make it in time for the blasted bag to drain.  She positively told me to "look how fast it's dripping, though!"  Yeah lady.  It's dripping.  DRIPPING.  I then went into a monologue of how awful my previous delivery had been and that I GO SO FAST that there wasn't time for an epidural and that I didn't want to do that over again and she better do something quick or I was going to pop this kid out without an epidural and I didn't want to do that again.  Epidural, epidural, EPIDURAL!!  There was about ten seconds of Rex, the doctor, and the nurse in complete silence staring down at me after I finished, not knowing what to say.  In perfect timing, the anesthesiologist walks in with her magical cart.  While she's asking me question after question I can hardly talk since the contractions are coming so close together now and I am really holding back the swear words.  Rex ends up answering most of them for me.  Then finally they tell me to sit on the edge of the bed.  I scoot towards the edge and hunch over waiting for the blessed needle I've heard so much about when...

my water breaks.

They tell me to lay down.  Huh?  LAY DOWN!!  Overwhelmed and frozen with pain, I can hardly get back to the bed.  They push me down. When they do, they discover that the baby is crowning and that he's coming RIGHT NOW!  There was no time to get the stirrups and Rex and a nurse grab a leg each.  I push two times when the nurse tells me to look down.  And I see my sweet little gooey boy coming out and resting on my belly.  I start crying out of joy and can't stop saying, "You're here! You're here!" They clean him off and start taking care of me. The doctor notes that the IV bag is, in fact, still not empty.  I just keep staring over at my little boy in unbelief that he's out of my tummy finally and is HERE.  I could care less about an epidural at this point.  It happened all so fast and the joy I was feeling overwhelmed any other thought.

I am positively glowing when they wheel me to the recovery room with Rex and Cade.  The nurses aren't saying much and Rex is keeping his words careful as well.  When I ask him if he's okay, he answers with, "Yes, but are YOU okay??" Well besides from the obvious, yes I'm doing great! That's when he tells me that everyone was terrified of my reaction when I ended up not getting an epidural. I laugh it off and make sure to be extra friendly to the nurses from then on out.

Happy Birthday to Cade! And great job Edda doing it without an epidural again! There are so many similarities to my 3rd child's birth that it is funny (including the birth month! My little guy turned 2 the 1st). I'm glad that you are both doing well.
