Happy 4th Birthday, Sam! (Part 1)

I'm not sure why, but Sam's birthdays always seem to last much longer than they should.  Either way it doesn't really matter because it's as much a party for Aiden as it is for Sam!  Some cute things about Sam at this age:

  • Sam loves to draw and color.  He has the cutest works of art that often have a very happy, plump person in the middle.  He also likes to make them multi-colored on purpose so he can say, "Look, Mom!  It'th colorfull!"
  • Sam is goofy.  He makes funny sounds all the time just to make others laugh.
  • Sam is trying to figure out this world - what is real and what is just his imagination.  He asks "Why" a lot, either to learn something new or just to forestall doing something. :)
  • Sam two favorite food groups are SUGAR and VEGETABLES.   At least it balances out.
  • Sam often runs up to me, opens his mouth in anticipation and has to work so hard to get the words out before he bursts.  



Grandpa Tricks was driving through town and was able to take us all out to a pancake birthday breakfast for Sam.  Sam was very excited to wear his birthday crown that his preschool gave him.


 

Later in the day we went to Monkey Bizness (or as Sam called it, "Mon-kun-ee Bizneth!") with Auntie KD and Uncle Phat Tony.


Uncle Tony showed the boys how to build houses and TRAPS out of these fun building blocks.

 
 

The best part, of course, was breaking it apart from the inside out!



Cade got a turn inside one as well.  The boys thought it was so hilarious to surprise him through the holes.


 
 

Sam showed off his artistry in the craft room.  He painted me a "colorful" sun, as he described it.
 

That evening we celebrated Sam's birthday with just our family.  We ordered pizza and Sam got his cupcakes, which he was very happy to finally eat.  (He was making the funniest faces for all these pictures!  What a ham.)

 

Next came our gift for him.



As Sam put it, "What. The. Heck?"  There was a moment of confusion whether they thought the gift was cool or maybe just a little too much for them.



It was cool.  Go Bey Blades!  And Happy Birthday Sam!  We sure love you!!

Sam Richard Phillips

Here we are: the excited, tired, relieved parents of lil' Sam the Man. For those of you who don't know and are interested, I had Sam 7 weeks early. We think it happened because I had a marginal placenta previa (prone to excessive bleeding) and I had pushed myself while packing and getting ready for the big move. I have a hard time taking things easy apparently... Sam had a hard time breathing in the beginning. Within just a few days, however, he made a championship comeback and went from being on the respirator, to the CPAP (shown), to just the little nose thing that gives oxygen (same thing old men have.) He also had to get fed from a tube through his nose starting on the 2nd day. As you can see here, though, he proved himself again and got the tube removed to eat normally. What a man! Would you look at that hair! It's so blond it almost looks gray. It's also more hair than his older brother Aiden has now. I just can't get over how tin...

**DISCLAIMER** If you do not have children or have a weak stomach or are deciding whether or not to have children... you probably shouldn't read this post. And if you've been wondering about my parenting skills from the last couple posts, this one doesn't help my repertoire. It all started when I wanted to have a "Good Mommy Moment" and made chocolate pudding with Aiden before his nap. I told him that as soon as he woke up, the pudding would be done. So I put Aiden and Sam both down for their afternoon naps. It didn't last long. First, Aiden never went to sleep so I got him out after an hour or so. I gave him his pudding at the table, determined to keep a close watch on him so he'd keep his pudding in the kitchen. Then Sam started screaming.
